Washington’s Snoqualmie Pass just shattered a 20-year snowfall record

Washington’s weather has definitely started the new year with a bang. Seattle’s snowstorm may have stolen the spotlight recently, but Snoqualmie Pass is not to be ignored. In fact, it just broke the record for the most snow in 20 years since the storm began on January 3rd.

On Monday afternoon, the Washington State Department of Transportation recorded 236 inches of snow which is an increase from 229 inches on January 3rd, 2006, and 212 inches on the same date in 2003. It was enough snow to close the pass on Monday due to zero visibility and avalanche concerns.

Luckily for folks navigating the state’s main east-west highway, Snoqualmie Pass reopened on Monday night.

But as is the case with Washington’s unpredictable weather, it snowed again on Tuesday which reduced the pass’s allowed cars to all-wheel drive and cars with chains.

With more snow on the way, according to the National Weather Service, who knows what we have in store.

Maybe, just maybe, we’ll start 2022 with yet another recording-breaking snowstorm. But hey, all that snow means it’s a great time to break out those skis and hit the slopes!
