This Alberta town is considered Canada’s ‘Star Trek’ capital and has a giant spaceship to prove it

Most Alberta towns are known for their prairie landscapes, local history or outdoor adventures, but Vulcan has taken a very different route. Located about an hour from Calgary, this southern Alberta town has become known as Canada’s “Star Trek capital” thanks to its unique connections with the iconic sci-fi franchise.

From a giant spaceship replica sitting beside the highway to a Star Trek-themed visitor centre filled with memorabilia, Vulcan has fully embraced its cosmic identity.

Now let’s take a look at how this small Alberta town became known as Canada’s “Star Trek capital”.

How this Alberta town became a Star Trek destination

According to Vulcan Tourism, its connection to Star Trek began with a simple coincidence. Long before characters Captain Kirk and Spock travelled across the galaxy, Vulcan, Alta., was named after the Roman god of fire by a Canadian Pacific Railway worker in the early 1900s. The name has absolutely nothing to do with Star Trek, but once the franchise introduced Spock’s home planet Vulcan in 1966, the connection was too good to ignore.

The town began embracing its Star Trek Connection in the early 1990s to create a unique identity and attract visitors. According to Vulcan Tourism, one of Vulcan’s most recognizable landmarks is the Starship FX6-1995-A, a large replica spaceship located near Highway 23. Over the years, the attraction has become one of the town’s biggest photo opportunities, making it quite hard to miss when you’re driving through the area.

Of course, the spaceship is just a snippet of what makes Vulcan such a unique stop. You can also check out the Trek Station, a Star Trek-themed visitor centre that is designed to look like a landed spaceship. In the centre, you’ll find memorabilia, displays, and learn more about the town’s connection to the franchise.  The Trek Station opened in October of 1998 as a community effort to celebrate Vulcan’s connection to science, space, and the sci-fi series.

While a trip to the planet of Vulcan might be a little tricky, Alberta’s version is much easier to visit. This quirky prairie town has embraced its Star Trek connection in the best way possible, creating a road trip stop filled with photo ops and a story you won’t find anywhere else in the province.
