Welp, this week includes Valentine’s Day, so there are quite a few things that you can do that are related to that. There are a couple other events going on too that we included, just in case you weren’t planning on breaking the bank Thursday.

Here are our top 8 things to do this week.

Watch a film about an African superhero

No, not Black Panther. The Kenyan film Supa Modo is playing at VanCity Theatre on Monday. A meditation on reality and escapism, the film follows Jo as she navigates a terminal illness with her sister, Mwix. As crushing as it is uplifting, this is not a film for the faint of heart.

When: Monday, February 11 at 6:30 PM
Where: VanCity Theatre

See an Aurora

Only tangentially related to the things in the sky. This Norwegian pop artist is playing at the Commodore. Her sound is a blend of layered electronic beats, a wide vocal range, and spare bass. Her 2016 album, All My Demons Greeting Me as a Friend, debuted at number 1 in Norway, so she’s got that going for her.

When: Wednesday, February 13 at 7 PM
Where: Commodore Ballroom

Enjoy a night of laughs with Howie Mandel

How’s that Drake song go? Draft day, Howie Mandel? Yeah, that’s probably it. Anyways, he’s hosting a night of comedy as part of the Just for Laughs festival. Howie also bought, alongside ICM, the Just for Laughs Group (fun fact), so you get to see the new big dog in action. Deal or no deal?

Listen to Michael Landsberg discuss mental health

One of the biggest names in Canadian broadcasting, Michael Landsberg has been a proponent of mental health awareness for quite some time. This talk will emphasize the importance of overcoming the stigma of mental health as some sort of weakness. With 1 in 5 Canadians affected by mental health issues, now is as timely as ever for people like Landsberg to speak up.

Explore the city a little bit

Why not get outside for an hour or two? Oh, because it might be one of the worst weeks of the year? Pfft, layer up, wear a raincoat and some boots, and enjoy a peaceful winter stroll around Vancouver. Check out our guide for the best places to go on Valentine’s.

Have Palentine’s Day!

So you decided that this is the year to subvert the traditional Valentine’s Day. You’re in luck because we wrote a guide to help you with that. Get out there and reclaim this day for everyone that sits at home crying, watching romantic movies from the early 2000s.

And that’s our list for this week Vancouver! Go out and enjoy yourself, or stay at home and try to sleep this weather off, either works with us.
