You might have already heard about MEC getting sold. Well, you’re not alone if you’d rather not lose the biggest co-op in the country. New petitions, which want to block the sale, have emerged online and are gaining traction. Here’s what you need to know about it.

Early last week, MEC put out a press release saying that they were going to be bought by a private investment firm. Now, this is the exact kind of thing that is never supposed to happen to co-ops, so some members were a little cheesed off about it.

And then, they decided to do something about it. Two petitions sprung up, garnering over 200,000 signatures. Plus, a new petition was created specifically for MEC members. Why does that matter? Because with enough votes, regular folks can call a Special General Election to overturn to board’s decision. It’s a lot of legal mumbo jumbo, but that’s the end goal.

So if you’d like to lend a helping hand, you can sign the petitions here and here. If you’re a MEC member, then click this link for the membership petition as well.
