Hey Vancouver, it’s International Women’s Day today! So we thought it’s a great time to showcase a few of Vancouver’s women-owned businesses. Consider this as a handy list the next time you’re craving a great meal, a new piece of jewelry… whatever! There are tons of women-owned businesses to check out.
In addition, we at Curiocity recognize the inherent issues that come with dedicating a time frame to address a particular social problem. We feel as though it is imperative to recognize these problems day to day, and do our best to present balanced articles spotlighting and championing all races and genders. Additionally, we would like to make it clear that we use the term ‘women’ intersectionally.
So, here are great women-owned businesses to check out around Vancouver.
Harlow Skin Co. & Atelier
We love a good clean skincare line and Harlow Skin Co. is one of our favourites. Harlow Skin Co. is a brand that creates powerful, high-quality, and clean skincare. In addition, founder Chrystal Macleod has formed a beautiful shop in Vancouver that showcases the best of like-minded clean living brands. We highly recommend you check out the store if you’re in the mood to treat yourself or a friend.

Flourist
We’re sure you know that Vancouver is a city that takes brunch seriously. And, Flourist takes it more seriously. The women-owned business focuses on 100% traceable grains, beans, and freshly milled flours. So you can have the best of both worlds. You can enjoy their tasty eats at the cafe or have freshly milled flours delivered to your door. We will have to get back to you on our favourite treats to try.

NADA
We don’t know about you but we love a good grocery store. And especially when the grocery store is zero waste! NADA is Vancouver’s first zero-waste grocery store and was created by two women. In addition, they have made zero-waste accessible through an easy system, great staff, and decent prices. So the next time you need groceries, make sure to try NADA

Aisle
Formerly known as Lunapads, Aisle is changing the world of menstrual health. Similarly, owners Suzanne Siemens and Madeleine Shaw are committed to creating more environmentally products for menstruating people. So you can expect high-quality, plastic-free, reusable pads.

Community Thrift and Vintage/Frock Shoppe
Our favourite spot in the city for vintage clothing, Community is a not-for-profit organization that actively supports the DTES community. The spot on Hastings is unisex, while the Frock Shoppe around the corner focuses on womenswear. Both are great.

East Van Roasters
With a similar business model as Community Thrift, East Van Roasters is just as much about empowering those in the DTES community as it is about coffee. Lucky for us that their roasts and house-made chocolates are absolutely delicious. So, bean-water lovers, if there’s one brand to support, it’s this one.

Wolf Circus
Featuring an all-women team, Wolf Circus has cornered the market for ‘affordable luxury’ jewelry. Ethically sourced and reasonably priced, there’s a reason why they’re taking over the city. Read our exclusive interview with founder Fiona Morrison here.

Massy Books
Massy Books is by far the most community-oriented bookstore in the city. They carry both new and vintage books, with a solid focus on local writers and artists. Check out the art gallery upstairs, or inquire about the next event they’re hosting.

Bandidas Taqueria
The staple Mexican restaurant on Commercial has been supporting women in Vancouver since they opened. This year, they are hosting an all-day fundraiser for various women’s charities in Vancouver. All profits from food are being donated, and they’re hosting an art show showcasing female artists.

Downlow Chicken Shack
Thanks to their female co-owner and head chef, Downlow is the only place in the city that rivals Juke. Heck, they might even be better, we personally think it’s a toss-up. One thing is for certain though, their hot chicken is way better, and they’ve got collaborations down pat.

Rio Theatre
The best independently owned and operated theatre in the city, Rio hosts everything from vintage movie nights to burlesque shows (and now, sports!). The theatre has been a longstanding part of Vancouver’s culture, and we’re not ready for it to go anywhere.

Vancity Credit Union
The city’s most progressive and best banking institution has a female president and CEO. So, it’s only fair that we toss Vancity in this list, even if it’s a little more corporate. Thinking about switching banks in the near future? Your next spot should be a no-brainer.
Vancouver has a fair amount of women-owned and led businesses, and we’re just scratching the surface with this list. However, we can all be better about identifying them and giving them our support and we hope this article helps you to do that.
