Bourdain’s ‘Lunch Lady’ to help open new Vancouver restaurant

There’s a new restaurant coming to Commercial Drive, and it’s got the help of one of the most famous street vendors in the world to help out a little bit. Say hello to The Lunch Lady, which is replacing the Five Elements Cafe on the Drive. But don’t worry, ownership hasn’t changed.

First, the Lunch Lady herself. Originally featured on Anthony Bourdain’s No Reservations in 2009, Mrs. Nguyen Thi Thanh is a street food vendor in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Known for serving just one dish per day, Thanh won the heart of Bourdain with her delicious, authentic Vietnamese dishes.

So, the owner of Five Elements Cafe, who is a friend of Thanh’s, contacted her to see if she’d like to help open a restaurant here. Luckily for us, the answer was yes. The Lunch Lady will feature two different menus, and the lunch options will include all of Thanh’s original dishes.

Dinner, on the other hand, will focus on Thanh’s fellow street food vendors in Ho Chi Minh City. Honestly, it sounds like a match made in heaven, and we can’t wait to try both out.

We’ve reached out to The Lunch Lady for more information.
