Inside Vancouver’s new stock exchange cocktail bar (PHOTOS)
What do you do with an old stock exchange? You turn it into a bar, logically. Open Outcry, which opened this past summer is the latest tenant at the old trading floor of the newly refreshed Vancouver Stock Exchange building at Pender & Howe.
Open Outcry is the latest venture of restaurateur Sean Heather. Heather is known for his well established Vancouver restaurants Irish Heather and Salt Tasting Room. So, you know it has to be good.
Heather wanted to celebrate the colourful characters of the previous building tenants through classic and modern cocktail culture and a massive mural by celebrated artist Jeff Burgess. If you’re wondering about the name, it comes from the style of coded hand gestures and yelling by the traders who once worked the Stock Exchange floor. Hey, the more you know, right?
The kitchen has kept its menu simple without sacrificing variety, with everything from Spanish-inspired pintxo skewers to hearty pasta available. We recommend starting with the Smoked Salmon with dill cream cheese on Irish wheaten bread. Avocado toast? Never heard of it.
If you don’t eat the fruits of the sea, no worries. Try the Buddha Bowl which comes with brown rice, baby spinach, pickled carrots, avocado, watermelon radish, gem tomato, cucumber, tahini dressing, and toasted sesame seed.
Still not satisfied? Go for the gnocchi with roasted mushroom, garlic butter, grated pecorino, and sourdough gremolata. Trust us, no matter how picky you are this spot will have a dish for you to enjoy.
Whatever your fancy may be, Open Outcry has you covered.
