Behind the scenes at Vancouver’s essential fried chicken shack
Ever since opening last summer, DownLow Chicken Shack has been taking over Vancouver’s fried chicken scene. From insanely long lines to great collaborations, and most recently, a new concept inside The American, it’s clear that this Nashville hot chicken spot is here to stay.
Let’s start with the most important part of DownLow- the chicken itself. Brought in 5 times weekly, the meat here is never frozen. Plus, they only use hormone, GMO and antibiotic free, free fun, grain-fed birds. By starting with the best products, they can create incredibly tender and tasty fried chicken.
Which is why we think their original chicken sandwich is one of the best in the city, period. Choose from five spice levels (mild to ‘side of milk’) and get ready for a one way trip to Flavourtown.
Of course, DownLow does so much more than chicken sandwiches and fantastic pickles. And no matter what you pick, you’re going to want some sides to go with it. We’re suckers for the macaroni salad, but the slaw, baked beans and fries are all delicious as well.
If you’re really feeling crazy, then we suggest going for their chicken and waffle dish. Two boneless thighs on a cheddar scallion waffle, topped with a smoked jalapeno honey mayo? Pinch us, we must be dreaming.
Hours: Tuesday to Saturday, 11AM-9PM and Sunday, 11AM-4PM (or until the chicken runs out), Closed Monday
