A look inside La Grotta, Vancouver’s best Italian deli
You know, one spot we listed in our guide to Vancouver’s best sandwiches is so good that we had to get down there and show it off to you. La Grotta Del Formaggio has been an iconic part of Little Italy for over 40 years. From humble beginnings to now, there’s nothing not to like here.
La Grotta first started in 1977, when Fortunato Bruzzese opened a small Italian deli at 1791 Commercial Drive. Having immigrated to Canada from southern Italy, he wanted to create a space that could make anyone feel like they were standing in one of his hometown stores.
Fortunato’s son, Domenico, decided to attend cooking school to receive formal training in the business. After spending some time in the restaurant industry, he returned to La Grotta to help out his dad.
By 2005, the business had grown enough to be able to be a wholesaler for Mediterranean products around Metro Vancouver. Now, La Grotta supplies some of the best hotels and restaurants in the city, while still maintaining a storefront on Commercial.
Why all the backstory? Well, when you buy one of their deli sandwiches we want you to know that you’re biting into something four decades in the making. You know, just in case the flavour wasn’t enough. Besides, why else would write about it if we didn’t want to help you uncover your city!
