Heads up! This year’s incredible Perseid meteor shower has kicked off
If you were looking to get outdoors this week, then you need to check out the Perseid meteor shower going on. This yearly event is one of the most spectacular (and easiest) meteor showers to see. Need a little info? Here’s what you should know.
The Perseid meteor shower occurs every summer, and usually in August. Basically, the earth passes through a bunch of comet dust. As that dust burns up in our atmosphere, we get to be treated to a whole bunch of shooting stars. Bring a few snacks and you’ve got dinner and show!
And when we say a whole bunch we mean it. This year, you can expect to see anywhere between 50 and 100 meteors an hour. Just make sure you’re somewhere with clear skies and you’ve given your eyes some time to adjust to the darkness. That also means no max brightness on your phones if you’re trying to snag some photos.
The meteor shower is actually supposed to be its brightest today, Wednesday, August 12th. And while the Canada Space Agency suggested getting out before dawn, we think you’ll still be treated to a wonderful show tonight.
