In a pretty crazy turn of events, the CFL announced that it is exploring partnership options with the US-based XFL. The two leagues had experienced a pretty tough 2020, with the CFL cancelling the season and the XFL getting bought out of bankruptcy. But, we’re excited about the possibilities! Here’s why.

As a quick backgrounder, the XFL first came about in the early 2000s, courtesy of WWE founder Vince McMahon. That petered out after one season, but was revived again in 2019. The timing, admittedly, was terrible- teams had only played 5 games when the season was cut short due to COVID-19. As of August last year, the league had been sold to, among other people, Dwayne Johnson. Kind of a full-circle thing there. It’s almost poetic.

Anyway, the CFL faced an equally difficult 2020, and is (in our opinion) motivated to get back on the horse. With in-person attendance still in a solid ‘maybe’ category, a merger with the entertainment-focused XFL is actually a pretty reasonable idea. While interleague games between the CFL and the NFL have taken place, there has never been a season where pro teams from either side of the border face off against one another.

Now, the big question is, which XFL team will match the intensity of the Roughriders fan base? That’s the future rivalry we’d like to keep tabs on. For more info on the potential partnership, head to the CFL website.
