Just For Laughs Fest returns to Van this week
Just For Laughs Northwest returns to Vancouver this week for its fourth year in the city. Featuring 10 days of programming, Just For Laughs brings together international talent and local gems for a comprehensive comedy festival.
We sifted through the entire Just For Laughs website to give you a full summary of this massive comedy festival. The first thing we noticed? That owl they use (his name is Kevin) is straight out of our nightmares.
The next thing we noticed is that the line-up for 2019 is absolutely nuts. There are tons of comedians and artists performing throughout the city, so get your funny-bone ready for an active couple of weeks. Of the shows you can still get a ticket for, we would recommend Ken Jeong, Reggie Watts, Fred Armisen, Natasha Leggero and Dulce Sloan. However, with over 30 comics performing, you really don’t need to take our advice here- there’s definitely a comic for everyone.
As for local talent, you won’t be disappointed by that either. The evenings range from a night about disastrous tinder dates, to comedy art reviews, to improv, and even an underground comedy show. So if you’d rather support your local scene than check out some international comics, you’ve got a lot of options available.
This year is also the second year for the Just For Laughs Film Festival. Geared towards supporting indie filmmakers, this has almost as many panels about making comedy as it does actual movies. Of the films screening, our top choice is Thunder Road, a tragicomic tale that dominated 2018’s film festivals.
And to round things off, JFL will be putting on a 3-day long block party that is open to the public in downtown Vancouver. There will be Just For Laughs Gags playing on the big screen, games, music and special guests, so you could even just roll the dice and see if Seth Rogen shows up baked as hell to talk about doing voice-overs for TransLink.
Regardless of what you’re into, Just For Laughs has got it. Big shoutout to Howie Mandel for turning this festival around. You’re a good guy, Howie.
