Here comes the rain: TransLink alerts & advisories to know about in Metro Vancouver

While the snowfall in Metro Vancouver has officially transitioned to rain, we’re not quite out of the woods yet when it comes to TransLink delays. So grab your boots and umbrellas, and get ready to dive into some Vancouver weather updates for the weekend.

As of Friday morning, TransLink has issued an advisory that is currently in effect:

“Due to expected conditions on January 19th in Metro Vancouver, transit service impacts across the system, delays and cancellations are expected.”

Commuters are encouraged to use TransLink services for “essential travel only,” giving themselves extra travel time to accommodate bus and SkyTrain delays or reduced service.

“We continue to salt and sand bus loops and SkyTrain stations, but please use caution in these areas; there may be extra crowding on some bus routes and SkyTrain platforms.”

On the positive side, it looks like the roads are clearer than the past two days:

As of now, there are 155 active bus alerts, 5 SkyTrain alerts, and one SeaBus alert in effect.

For one, Expo Line trains “to Production Way” are currently terminating at Lougheed Station.

TransLink advises passengers who need to continue to Production-Way Station to transfer to the Millennium Line at Lougheed Station (Platform 3).

Trains bound to Waterfront Station are departing from Platform 2. Note that Platform 1 is being used exclusively for Lafarge Lake-Douglas trains, according to TransLink.

Here are several bus alerts to make note of:

• Main / Waterfront Station: Stop 50244 Southbound Main Street at East 20th Avenue is temporarily closed until 2:30 pm on January 19th
• 7 Dunbar / Nanaimo Station: Service cancelled on January 19th until further notice
• 22nd Street Station / Marpole Loop: 100 22nd Street Station / Marpole detour beginning at 6 am, with Trapp Road omitted in both directions
• Guildford / Surrey Central Station: 326 Surrey Central Station detour until January 26th from 9 am to 9 pm every weekday
• Richmond-Brighouse Station / 22nd Street Station: 410 22nd Street Station / Brighouse Station experiencing delays beginning at 9:24 am on January 19th

Passengers can navigate to their affected bus or train routes by searching by route number.

Metro Vancouver residents can also call TransLink’s Customer Information Services line (604-953-3333) until 10 pm, or reach out on Twitter/X until 12:30 am.

Weekend forecast

According to Environment and Climate Change Canada, Friday’s forecast includes “freezing rain” in the morning hours, with continued rainfall throughout the afternoon, totalling up to 20 mm.

In the evening, around 10 mm of rain is expected to fall, with the temperature remaining near 4°C.

As for Saturday and Sunday, Vancouverites can expect temperatures ranging from 4°C to 7°C, with a 30% chance of showers on Saturday during the day, and full rain forecasted for Sunday.
