This charming historic hamlet near Toronto dates back to the 1700s

You don’t have to travel far outside of the city to find a small town rich in heritage and charm. In fact, you don’t even have to leave the GTA! Unionville is an incredible spot to spend an afternoon and we’ll tell you why.

Established in the 1790s, Unionville is a quaint little hamlet within the larger city of Markham.

Its heritage buildings and main street will make you feel like you’re much further outside of Toronto than you really are.

According to Destination Ontario, Unionville is known for its pubs, parks, and restaurants.

It dates back over 200 years and the buildings look exactly as they did in the late 1700s.

On this day trip, you’ll actually get two destinations in one.

The nearby Old Markham Village is equally as charming with a main street featuring old homes that have been converted into local businesses.

Aside from strolling, window-shopping, and dining, there is plenty to see and do between the two districts.

For example, the Varley Art Gallery of Markham is said to be a hidden gem tucked away in Unionville.

Sweet tooths will love the  Old Firehall Confectionery — as the name suggests, this shop is located in a former fire hall.

Also coming up in Unionville is the Mid-Autumn Festival on September 29th, which will feature a night full of activities illuminated by hanging Chinese lanterns.

There are a number of nearby parks and trails which are especially scenic in the fall.

After a long day of exploring, you can warm up with a hot drink and a treat at the adorable Espresso 21 Cafe Restaurant.

Sounds like the perfect day to us!
