Firstly, the number one tip from the city of Toronto is if it’s too cold for you, it’s too cold for you dog. So on some days you’ll have to consider either staying in or keeping walks short.

Another great tip is to avoid shaving your dog in the winter. Remember their fur is there to keep them warm, so now is not the season for a new ‘do. If your dog is short-haired, you may consider a puppy sweater or coat that covers them from tummy to tail. There are some super cute ones on the market.

You can also dress your dog in little booties to protect its paws from snow, ice, and salty sidewalks. Or try massaging protectors into their paws and bringing a towel on your walk to wipe off any irritants.

Once your walk is complete, be sure to wash and dry your dog’s paws and stomach. There are lots of harmful chemicals and salt on the city streets that you don’t want your pup to be harmed by.
