Check out incredible art installations around the city thanks to BigArtTO
All the major events may be cancelled this season, but that doesn’t mean we can’t still enjoy the arts and culture of the city. Thanks to BigArtTO, there are plenty of opportunities for a little socially-distanced appreciation of local talent around town. This amazing initiative is providing Torontonians with gorgeous art displays all season long.
So what is BigArtTO? We’re glad you asked. The program is under the umbrella initiative of ShowLoveTO, launched at the beginning of the pandemic. It’s a way for Toronto residents to get to experience the joys of the city without breaking virus protocols and putting themselves and others at risk. If you like ActiveTO and CafeTO, you’ll definitely like BigArtTO.
From September till December, all 25 wards of the city will have gorgeous new art projections against buildings and walls. They’ll be incredible light displays and recorded videos created by local artists. Most of the collection was curated by OCAD and there’s a focus on showcasing BIPOC artists and recent graduations – those who were most disproportionately impacted by COVID-19.
The layout of the art projections was made specifically with social distancing in mind. You’ll be able to enjoy them from afar and they’ll be on a continual loop, so folks won’t need to plant themselves in place to catch the whole thing. The idea is that they’re more of a passing, enjoyable creation rather than an attraction to gather in front of.
You can check out the full schedule of BigArtTO installations right here to see when one will be popping up in your neighbourhood. Or don’t and enjoy them as a nice surprise.
