Almost all VIA Rail trains have been cancelled indefinitely across Canada
Choo choo, boo hoo. If you happen to have any rail vacations coming up you should check and see if it’s one of the many VIA Rail trains that have been cancelled indefinitely. Announced yesterday, VIA Rail said that the infrastructure owner, CN Rail, was unable to “fulfill their obligations under the Train Service Agreement”.
In a nutshell, the cancellation is a result of nationwide protests against the Coastal GasLink pipeline. Started by Wet’suwet’en hereditary chiefs and their supporters, the protests have shut down various transit routes. However, this is the first instance of trains getting cancelled on a national scale. We recommend this CBC article if you want to be brought up to speed.

It’s not only almost all VIA Rail trains being cancelled. Additionally, a fair number of other passenger trains (like the West Coast Express) have been affected as well. Since 5 million Canadians use these services, the impact is likely going to be felt across the country until the situation is resolved.
Check in with your local transit provider to see if your community has been affected. Dang, looks like no romantic train ride for us this Valentine’s Day.
Sadly, a romantic taxi ride just doesn’t have the same flair. Maybe we’ll walk.
