7 back to school tips we wish we knew in university
Considering there will be like a million students going back to school next week, why not sit ’round the campfire and hear some back to school tips? What makes us an authority? Well, we successfully spent 4 (maaaybe more) years of our life getting a degree, and didn’t even get asked to leave once. See, we know what we’re doing.
From what to wear to where to go, here are the back to school tips you didn’t know you needed!
DRESS FOR THE WEATHER
You might think this is straightforward, but the amount of people we know that get caught in the rain, snow, hail, or hot sun is nothing to laugh at. Find yourself some solid layers, and, if possible, a weather-resistant backpack. That way, you’ll be protected even if you lose your umbrella! RIP to ours.
GET A PART-TIME JOB
A little bit counterintuitive, but hear us out. Having a part-time job kind of forces you to structure your time and looks good on your CV. Also, you can blame school for being absent at work and vice versa. Trust us, your teachers and your boss will be very understanding.
JOIN SOME CLUBS
Student clubs can be a great way to ingratiate yourself in a particular demographic at school. That’s a fun way of saying “make some new friends and fit in.” Maybe you like robots, maybe you want to play sports, maybe you feel like getting into arguments about world politics! Whatever you feel like, there’s something out there for ya.
EXPAND YOUR FRIEND NETWORK
University is all about making buddies! Do they have to become lifelong friends? Absolutely not. But, asking for a phone number for studying purposes or going for a brewski after class can be very rewarding. Being nice is cool! Not to add any pressure, but your eventual wedding party could use some filling out. And on that note…
KNOW WHERE TO DRINK
Sure, a beer at the campus bar is nice. But, we talking that social capital game, baby. Knowing where to day drink, grab a beer or go for happy hour off-campus can be a huge mark of distinction. But that’s why you follow us, right? Right?
ACTUALLY TALK TO YOUR TEACHERS
This one usually gets added to the starry-eyed first year to-do list, and then never checked off. Your profs might seem weird or scary, but they (usually) know what they’re talking about. Go ahead and ask them if you need anything! Office hours aren’t just for them to stare into the distance alone. They’re supposed to, ya know, help you.
DON’T BE AFRAID TO GET OUT OF TOWN
Toronto’s a big, sprawling mass of city. If you’re slaving away at your desk and never leaving a six block radius, that’s no bueno! Take a weekend roadie with your weird roommate to bond, or splurge on a unique Airbnb to remind yourself what real air conditioning feels like.
And there you have it! Seven back to school tips we wish someone had shared with us before we started out at school. It’s what you make it, so make sure you balance actually trying with a lot of fun. Good luck!
