Another restaurant bites the dust, Toronto. It seems no one is safe from this awful pandemic. Now it looks like we’re saying goodbye to the legendary Don Alfonso 1890. This delicious spot has called Toronto home for the past 2 years. Within that time they’ve really made a name for themselves as one of the best Italian restos in the country.

We’re talking multiple awards and loads of prestige. They were recently recognized by the International Hotel and Property Awards as one of the world’s best-designed restaurants. They’ve also won awards such as Best New Restaurant in the World by Gambero Rosso, Best Italian Restaurant in Canada, and Top Ten of All Restaurants in Canada 2020 by La Liste. Plus, they were home to Michelin Star Chefs Alfonso and  Ernesto Iaccarino. Whew, pretty impressive stuff, right? But sadly, all that acclaim couldn’t save them from the fallout of this pesky virus.

Yup, the official announcement came a few days ago. It’s because of financial difficulties caused by COVID-19 that the spot is closing their doors. Apparently, the restaurant’s $1.5 million payroll made them ineligible for any government assistance. But because of that, they couldn’t make their $50,000 a month rent while the business was not running.

So the famous spot is saying goodbye. On Instagram, they said they’re looking for a new location, but until that happens we’ll be super sad to see them go. We’ll be crossing our fingers that things work out and they’re able to reopen somewhere else soon!
