5 underrated shows and movies to stream this weekend

Via IMDB and IMDB

The weekend is here so we’re ready to settle in for a good old-fashioned streaming session. This week we’ll be focusing on the underrated shows and movies our favourite platforms hold. From indie flicks to low-key TV series, this list is for those of you looking to immerse yourself in a hidden gem or two.

Here are 5 underrated shows and movies to stream this weekend.

MID90S

This edgy flick was Jonah Hill’s directorial debut, and boy did he hit it out of the park. The independent movie is an offbeat and sometimes uncomfortable story of a young boy who escapes his troubled home. It stars Sunny Suljic, Lucas Hedges, and Katherine Waterston; and it’s a great pick to start off your streaming marathon.

Where: Find it on Netflix.

ALIAS GRACE

Are you a fan of The Handmaid’s Tale? If so, you may enjoy another series based on the work of Canadian author Margaret Atwood. Alias Grace stars Toronto actress Sarah Gadon in a spine-chilling story about a woman locked up for murder. As the tale unwinds, thrilling twists are revealed and the whole thing leaves you with all kinds of thought-provoking questions.

LION

Okay, so this pick did pretty well award-wise, but we still don’t think it got all the hype it deserves. Watch Dev Patel and Nicole Kidman tell a heart wrenching true story about a man who was separated from his family as a young boy. Now an adult, Saroo (Patel) decides to find his lost family. The story is engaging all the way through, and great if you’re looking for a good cry this weekend. Seriously, have some tissues nearby for this one.

Where: Find it on Netflix.

WHAT’S EATING GILBERT GRAPE

We’re throwing it back to the 1990s for this pick. Catch young Leo DiCaprio in his breakout role, alongside young Johnny Depp. The two play brothers in a story about their relationship, love, and loss. The performances in this pick are seriously incredible. But, again, fair warning, you may want some tissues nearby.

Where: Find it on Prime Video

FRANCES HA

You know her as the award-winning director of Lady Bird and Little Women. But did you know before all that Greta Gerwig starred in underrated indie flicks? Now you do. Directed by her now-husband Noah Baumbach, Frances Ha is a charming little movie about a young kind-of-dancer in New York City. This one’s got a little drama, a little comedy, and a whole lot of fun.

Happy streaming, everyone! Let us know which of these underrated picks is your favourite.
