Toronto is getting its “first significant snowfall” & there’s a winter weather travel advisory

Well, Toronto. It is officially mid-November, and winter has made its early appearance. According to Environment Canada, the city of Toronto is under a “winter weather travel advisory” due to significant snowfall.

The advisory was issued on Tuesday morning, stating that snowfall amounts of 5 to 10 cm is possible, and that there will be poor visibility due to “heavy snow.”

Toronto can expect this starting this evening, and will taper to light snow early Wednesday morning. Although as of noon, it has began snowing in downtown Toronto already.

“An approaching low pressure system will make its way over Lake Erie tonight, bringing snow for much of southern Ontario. Easterly winds off Lake Ontario are expected to enhance this snowfall for much of the Golden Horseshoe, significantly reducing visibilities in heavy snowfall,” states the Environment Canada advisory.

“There is a potential for snowfall amounts to exceed 10 cm in a few locales.”

Environment Canada also calls this the “first significant snowfall of the season.”

Be sure to prepare for the conditions if you are heading out.

Earlier this week, the City of Toronto stated that they were ready for the snow, and that trucks applied a liquid salt brine to roads, hills, and bridges throughout the city to keep the roads safe.

Looking ahead, Toronto’s forecast continues to call for a chance of rain showers or flurries on Wednesday and into Thursday.
