Lace up: Toronto’s outdoor skating rinks are opening for the season

It’s time to sharpen up those skates and get your warmest gear out. Toronto’s outdoor skating season kicks off this weekend as outdoor artificial ice rinks will officially open for all to enjoy, this Saturday.

From local parks to the city’s popular outdoor skating rinks, Toronto offers great skating options – east to west. According to the city, Toronto’s outdoor rinks typically open in late November and last up until March. So that means you have plenty of time to hit the ice and practice those skills.

Without further ado, here are some of Toronto’s most popular outdoor skating rinks and their opening dates for the 2023-24 season.

Mel Lastman Square

For those in North York, Mel Lastman Square transforms into the hub for all things winter. Its pond gets frozen to become an outdoor ice rink and it’s a great spot to check out if you hope to avoid the downtown core.

Nathan Phillips Square

One of Toronto’s most beloved and iconic outdoor skating rinks is located at Nathan Phillips Square. Opening during the Cavalcade of Lights, Nathan Philips Square is sure to attract hundreds of thousands of visitors throughout the winter season for some skating action.

There’s something magical about skating under twinkling lights on a winter night.

Colonel Samuel Smith Park Trail

This figure eight shaped trail is located right next to the Power House Recreation Centre near Humber Lakeshore campus. The Colonel Samuel Smith Skating Trail is a popular spot among locals and it’s truly peaceful.

Barbara Ann Scott Ice Trail – College Park

Barbara Ann Scott Ice Trail is a five-metre-wide ice skating trail that opened in 2019. It’s located within College Park.

To celebrate its reopening, the Downtown Yonge BIA will be throwing a party on December 9th with activities, ice dances, a DJ, and even firepits to warm up.
