Toronto Blue Jays & Toronto FC may finally return for home games & fans this month

It’s been a LONG time coming, but the Toronto Blue Jays and Toronto FC might finally be able to call Toronto home once again. Excited? Yeah, us too.

As early as July 30, the Toronto Blue Jays could be returning back to the Rogers Centre to continue the rest of the 2021 season, while the Toronto FC could return to BMO Field on July 17.

Currently, both clubs are waiting on an application submitted to the federal government which, if approved, would allow them to play in Toronto once again.

It’s been a long year of cancellations, postponements, and a serious lack of live entertainment in the city, so it’s no surprise that the possibility of live sports coming back to the city has seen a long line of online supporters.

If these sorts of live sporting events do arrive back in Toronto as early as July, then the next question is if spectators will be allowed. Currently, under step 2 of Ontario’s Roadmap to Reopen plan, outdoor sports venues can operate at up to 25% capacity. As for whether or not this will be the case for July’s Toronto FC and Toronto Blue Jays games, we’ll have to keep a close eye on Ontario’s return-to-play framework.

BMO Field is already 100% an outdoor stadium, but maybe if the Rogers Centre keeps that roof retracted it’ll be sitting at 25% capacity as well. We don’t know about you, but we have been waiting a hell of a long time to overpay for a ballgame beer and hot dog.

The Blue Jays, who haven’t played a game at Rogers Centre since March of 2020 due to the pandemic, have been playing out of both Dunedin, Florida and Buffalo’s Sahlen Field over the past 15 months.
