Top of the world: This wilderness park in BC is over 2,200 metres high in elevation

When it comes to this wilderness provincial park, its name really speaks for itself. The Top of the World Provincial Park is situated high in the Kootenay Ranges of the Canadian Rockies and it’s one of the “alpine gems of our park system,” according to BC Parks.

Part of the Top of the World Plateau, the park is surrounded by the rugged peaks of the Hughes Range. At its highest point atop Mount Morro, the park reaches a staggering 2,912 metres high. 

The year-round park is most popular among campers and hikers during the warmer months, and cross-country skiers and ice fishers during the winter months.

Camping amenities

Located on the traditional lands of the Ktunaxa, or Upper Kutenai Peoples, the park has many family-friendly features to offer.

For one, its largest body of water (Fish Lake) is accessible via an easy and well-maintained trail, where there are numerous first-come-first-served campsites available for $5 per person per night.

Rather stay in a cabin? The Fish Lake cabin can accommodate up to 18 people and is available for $15 per person per night, or $30 per family.

Partial trail closure

Note that hikers are discouraged from travelling on the first section of the horse trail (alternate trail to Fish Lake) to Sayles Meadow.

The second portion of the horse trail, however, is currently still accessible via the main Fish Lake Trail. This is a great option if you’re hoping to explore Crazy Creek and Crazy River en route to Fish Lake.

Also, note that the trail closure starts at the junction of the Fish Lake Trail/Sparkle Lake Trail and ends at Alpine View Point/Coyote Creek Junction.
