This road trip in Ontario takes you to waterfalls, sandy beaches & forest boardwalks

This is the end-of-summer road trip you didn’t know you needed. You can see the beauty of the Boreal Forest on this epic driving tour and there are so many unique stops. This part of the province is described as “a region that many Canadians will never see, yet offers so much in terms of history, culture, and natural wonder,” according to Ontario Parks.  Canada’s Boreal Forest is so vast that it affects the health of the environment worldwide.

There are 8 stops on this route, which starts in the northern city of Sudbury. Some destinations are a shorter drive than others but the breathtaking sights you’ll see are worth every kilometre.

Kap-Kig-Iwan is about a 3-hour drive from Sudbury, and it’s considered a must-see. Your hike will take you past the park’s majestic river, which tumbles through a gorge filled with waterfalls and cataracts.

Esker Lakes Provincial Park is just an hour and it features a secluded boardwalk nestled in a wet Black Spruce forest. The park sits on the bed of what was once a wide glacial river flowing across the glacial ice, about 10,000 years ago.

Fushimi Lake Provincial Park is probably one of the most picturesque destinations you’ll see on this road trip. The lake is located within the park and it’s surrounded by a sandy shoreline as well as Boreal spruce, poplar, and pine trees. You can even spend the night at the serene campground.

For more beachy landscapes, you’ll want to check out Ivanhoe Lake, which is a 4-hour drive from Sudbury. Most of the shoreline is pristine sand and you’ll want to stay for the sunset so you can see the breathtaking panoramic views. And a few years ago, there was a rare Spirit Moose spotted in this park too.

The total drive time for all 8 of these stops is 20 hours, but you can choose which ones you’d like to see and make your trip shorter. To see just the Ontario Parks’ highlight destinations, it could take you anywhere from 5 to 10 days, depending on how much time you’d like to spend exploring.
