This BC artist makes the most insane driftwood art & you can put in orders

If you’ve ever walked along the beach, you’ve definitely seen a few pieces of interesting driftwood. Maybe you were a kid and thought one looked like a sword or a cane or some other imaginative item. Well when BC artist Alex Witcombe sees driftwood, he sees a velociraptor, a sasquatch and even a full-sized VW Beetle.

Witcombe makes elaborately detailed and very cool sculptures out of salvaged driftwood. You will be blown away by the details on these puppies.

A graduate of The Emily Carr School of Art and Design, Witcombe started Drifted Creations in 2016 and has been making these world-class driftwood sculptures ever since. He lives out in the Gulf Islands, which we’re sure is one of the best places in the world to be for a steady supply of driftwood.

One of our favourites of his sculptures is the full-sized, super detailed 1967 Volkswagen Beetle. It even has driftwood pedals, seats, doors, and mirrors and looks like it just drove out of a Pacific Northwest-inspired swinging ‘60s. The sculpture is made even more powerful when you realize its license plate has Witcombe’s late father’s initials on it. With that context, it’s a sweet, powerful tribute.

Another great sculpture that he did was a velociraptor, which looks like something right out of the Jurassic Park movies. Eat your heart out Spielberg.

Witcombe has a variety of great sculptures on his Instagram, but you can learn more about him and his work on his website

You can also commission your own driftwood sculpture. So, keep your eye out for when Alex opens commissions up again.
