This award-winning Canadian home for sale is a unique oceanfront getaway

Canada has some absolute stunners, but they’re unusually pretty tame in the design department. Ready to step into an architecture magazine? The oceanfront Smith House in Nova Scotia hits all the notes- location, design, and functionality.

It’s called the Smith House. Basically, the home is the centrepiece of a new, master-planned community called Shobac Cottages, which is located to the south of Halifax. The idyllic setting offers a mix of cliffs, beaches and forested hills.

MacKay-Lyons Sweetapple Architects, which is the firm behind the Smith House, has a solid history of making some of Canada’s most stunning homes. There’s a noticeable focus on brutalist architecture and Bauhaus design, resulting in some amazing contrasts with the surrounding landscapes.

Alright, enough of the preamble, and on to the main show. The Smith House is separated into two pavilions, which are located on top of a ‘stone acropolis’ foundation. One pavilion is for daytime activities, while the other features the master bedroom.

The amenities are both minimalist and beautiful. Cozy up with a book in front of the 16-foot fireplace. Head to the adjacent entertainment building to watch some tv or play a board game. Or, invite a couple of friends over for drinks and nibbles in the cellar dining room.

Finally, the house’s actual setting is second to none. The oceanfront lot offers incredible views of the water, with windows framed so that you can take in each sunset. Or, step onto the patio (complete with built-in BBQs) for a glass of wine on a summer’s day.
