Happy first week of October, Edmonton! It’s sort of, now, officially scary season, and Mondays can be scary. But plan to add some fun in your week, because we’re here to help with that. Here are 10 things to do in and around Edmonton this week!

Edmonton Oilers

It’s almost hockey season, and the Edmonton Oilers are hosting several home games. Two preseason games take place this week against the Calgary Flames on October 4th, and Seattle Kraken on the 6th.

Music and movie fans will be interested in this one! From Interstellar and Dune to Driving Miss Daisy and The Holiday, Hans Zimmer has “created moving and powerful sound worlds that are unforgettable.” And this week, you can join Hollywood conductor Richard Kaufman when – for the first time – the Edmonton Symphony plays an entire evening of Zimmer’s film music!

Old Strathcona Ghost Tours

There’s a ghostly walk through Old Strathcona this week that is sure to give you a chill! The tour stops in front of the Strathcona Hotel, the Princess Theatre, the Strathcona High School and many other buildings, houses, and shops that have reported ghosts, hauntings, murders, and mysteries.

Outdoor Autumn Night Market

Get ready to cozy up by the fire under the stars at a night market! The Outdoor Autumn Night Market is taking place this week and you can explore over 10 vendors, and sip on warm and comforting apple cider.

DARK: Fort Edmonton Park

On select nights from October 6 to 29, you’ll be able to face your biggest fears in Edmonton!  Dark at Fort Edmonton Park has new haunting experiences at its event, which is celebrating 6 years of terror. “Survive a horde of undead in a defenceless frontier town. Escape the deranged killer clown whose grand gesture is murder. Dare to discover what nightmares are made during  the witching hour,” states the event. We are scared just reading that.

Gateway to the Stars

Looking to see the stars in dark skies? You can join fellow night sky enthusiasts at Astotin Lake after dark! Elk Island National Park is a member of the Beaver Hills Dark Sky Preserve –  and it is a perfect place to experience the stars and planets above! Be sure to register in advance.

Smoky Lake Pumpkin Fair & Great White North Weigh-Off

Located northeast of Edmonton, Smoky Lake is the official “pumpkin capital of Alberta,” and even hosts a festival every year attended by people all over the country. Highly anticipated by gourd enthusiasts and local fun-seekers, The Smoky Lake Pumpkin Fair gets bigger every year, much like the giant orange entries do at the annual weigh-off. This time around, they’ll kick things off on Thursday with a harvest dinner, before inviting everyone to indulge at the food trucks and a beer garden on Friday night.
