Pop some corn and layer the butter. Just in time for the weekend, Kensington’s historic Calgary Plaza Theatre has officially reopened to the public with a new owner and a brand new look.
Built in 1935, the beloved landmark was to be sorely missed when operators were forced to close its doors at the beginning of the pandemic
Luckily with the public’s support and a lease sign in the window, it was saved in April of 2021 with a promise to keep it running as an independent theatre, with a respect for films both new and old.
As for those of you who shudder in the face of change, while it may have undergone a revitalization, rest assured that new leaseholders, David and Fatima Allie Dobrowolski have done what they can to keep the magic intact.

“We love The Plaza. It holds a special space in the heart of Calgarians and is a historic fixture within Kensington,” they write on the Plaza’s new website.
“While we are making aesthetic changes and updating areas of the building, we value the sentiment of the building and its place in local history. Look forward to new releases, timeless classics, and yes, of course, Rocky Horror Picture Show.”
If you’re interested in checking it out this weekend, the plaza will be showing Belfast and Dune between January 14th and the 20th, with more times and titles to come.
