One of Toronto’s newest wellness studios is opening its doors on November 9th, and this one is a little different than others in the city. The Villij is a space and studio for women of colour, and offers different classes including a “Just Checking In” experience.
According to The Villij, the space was founded by Kim and Shanelle, coworkers turned best friends, as a way to transform “the way women of colour nurture well-being through meaningful connections.”
They believed that women of colour deserve access to tools to nurture their well-being. “After years of feeling excluded, isolated and overwhelmed in health and wellness spaces, the duo set on a path to change the way women of colour accessed tools to take better care of themselves and their communities,” states their website. “Our mission is to help women of colour nurture their well-being through affirming wellness education, experiences and support.”

The new studio aims to host weekly yoga classes, wellness events, as well as mental health workshops. There are currently seven yoga classes available on the schedule, with many accessible to beginners and all levels. Yoga mats are provided, along with props that are needed for the class.
Yoga classes here include ones called Be Still, Soulful Stretch, TrapSoul Yoga, Peaceful Pause, and Move Slow. Classes are 1 hour and cost $33.90.
The Villij also offers a “Just Checking In” experience, which is described as “an intimate and relaxed setting where like-minded women of colour have the opportunity to connect using The Villij’s Just Checking In Card Game to spark honest and deep conversations. The room is always buzzing and many women leave with new friends,” the studio’s team told Curiocity.
The Villij officially opens on November 9th, and classes can be booked online.
