Toronto’s getting a virtual reality exhibit that whisks you back in time

Ever wondered what it would be like to step inside a time machine? Well, thanks to virtual reality, now you can. Toronto’s getting a new immersive VR adventure that transports you to some of the world’s most extraordinary libraries both real and imagined.

Brought to us by the same company of multisensory exhibits like Immersive Klimt and Immersive Van Gogh, Robert Lepage’s The Library at Night “is an immersive and sensory virtual-reality journey that whisks you away to 10 libraries throughout time and across the globe – from Mexico to Japan, Copenhagen, Sarajevo and beyond,” the description says.

The VR journey was created by Canadian theatre director and actor Robert Lepage and inspired by the original The Library at Night book, written by Argentinian author Alberto Manguel.

Visitors will step inside a darkened library where they’ll put on their VR headsets and explore the mysteries of what happens inside the world’s most iconic libraries when the lights go out.

Some of the places you’ll get to visit include the Admont Abbey in Austria, Hasedera Temple in Japan, the Alexandria Library past and present, the Vasconcelos Library in a dry riverbed in Mexico, Canada’s Library of Parliament, the Sainte-Geneviève Library in Paris, and more.

“The Library at Night will immerse you in these libraries like never before,” the description says. “Step inside, explore, discover.”

The exhibit has made its way to cities around the world and pretty soon, it will be coming to Toronto. You can sign up for early access to tickets to be among the first in the city to experience it.
