3 things you can do to prepare for a fun day of tree & shrub planting in Canada

Tree and shrub planting can be a great way to connect with nature and give back to your community. Lucky enough for all you green thumbs (and beginners just starting out!), there are actually a bunch of tree planting events taking place across Canada that you can join and put your gardening skills to the test!

The annual TD Tree Days program is back and looking for volunteers! The collaborative volunteer program brings together community members, tree planting experts, municipalities, and organizations to plant trees and shrubs in rural and urban areas to help enhance local green spaces.

Now in its 14th year, thousands of trees and shrubs will be planted from coast to coast with support from TD Friends of the Environment Foundation (TD FEF) and 58 non-profit organizations

Tree and shrub planting is a win for your soul and is a great way to help revitalize your local communities! All you have to do is register online, and viola!

Want to volunteer for an amazing cause this season? Check out these handy tips to prepare for the beginning of your new planting era this fall.

How to get ready for tree planting in Canada

Plan your outfit

TD Bank Group

Make sure you come dressed in the right gear to have the best (and safest) experience possible. That means layers for changing weather conditions, rain garments to stay dry, and a hat and sunglasses too! Volunteers are also encouraged to wear long-sleeved, comfy clothing that you don’t mind getting dirty.

When it comes to your shoe game, make sure they are closed-toe and sturdy, like hiking boots or running shoes — long socks are recommended! TD provides gardening gloves at each tree planting location but you can always bring your own if you prefer.

Bring out the supplies

It’s always a good idea to have a couple of extras when you’re out digging in the dirt. Your local planting experts suggest bringing mosquito repellant and sunscreen to stay protected while planting.

You may be sweating up a storm and should be prepared for other physical activities like digging, lifting, and mulching, which means a reusable water bottle will surely come in handy when you’re feeling parched. Always make sure you stay hydrated!

Pack some snacks

Everything is better with snacks — tree planting included. Whether you crack open a granola bar or gobble up some fruit, volunteers are welcome to bring their own food.
