Toronto’s new ‘drama free’ club has a no-phone policy, no VIP & no dress code

This is not your average King West club. Opening tonight, Sub Division describes itself as a “drama-free electronic eatery that the city has been missing in the King West neighbourhood.”

Located on the lower floor at 461 King St West near Spadina Ave, Sub Division will be adopting a “one-size-fits-all” approach to clubbing, which means no bottle service or VIP areas.

Sub Division doesn’t even have a dress code. “Come as you are — we care about the music, not about what you wear,” their website says. They do suggest wearing your dancing shoes, though!

The atmosphere is designed to transport you to a lush urban terrarium. “Descend into the subterranean lair for underground electronic music, located in the heart of downtown Toronto,” says the website.

Plus, you’ll have to check your phone at the door along with your coat because the venue has a no-phone policy. Yup, that means no Instagram stories from the dance floor — we’ll be partying the old-fashioned way!

“Nothing spoils the dancefloor like a bright screen and camera flashes,” says Sub Division’s policy. “So instead, respect others and limit your phone use to the lobby.”

The 21+ electronic music venue also serves an Izakaya-inspired menu with Japanese flavours and small plates designed for sharing and creative flavour combinations.

“Guests are encouraged to socialize, eat, drink, dance and be present in the moment,” the description says. “Sub Division is the ideal place to grab a drink, settle in, and get comfortable.”

In short, it’s good vibes only at Sub Division. And we definitely love the sound of that!
