The Curiocity guide to spring fashion in Canada for 2022

A new season is just around the corner, fellow fashion lovers! And while there are some global trends developing, there’s no doubt that spring fashion in Canada has its own flavour year after year. Not only do we have to deal with some wonky weather here and there, but with the provinces across Canada starting to reopen, we need to start thinking about how we’re going to look once we’re outside the living room once more.

So, here are some of the biggest trends we’re seeing, and our guide to spring fashion in Canada for 2022.

So 2000 and Late

Fashion is cyclical, folks! And although we weren’t expecting it, the late 90s/early 2000s have re-entered the fashion world, and we’re easily calling it the top trend for spring fashion in Canada. We’re talking flared jeans (themselves a trend from the 70s), ironic and over-the-top tops, and interesting cuts (including low-rise for women and high waist for men) that scream “I’m going to the Backstreet Boys concert this weekend”. Now, all we need is a Nokia Sidekick to complete the look.

The Bigger the Better

On a similar note, ‘volume’ seems to be more and more fitting for this year’s style, at least from some designers. On the one hand, the boxy, oversized look has completely re-entered the men’s fashion world (time for another pair of Dickie’s!) while womenswear is filled with more sensual, but still voluminous, fabrics.

The Skin You’re In

What’s spring if not the precursor to summer, though? As the temperatures and the events we go to heat up, a number of designers have opted for form-fitting looks that utilize sheer materials and revealing cuts. We don’t know if we’re ready to show our midriff quite yet, but it’s good to know that it’s out there. Especially when we’re lounging poolside with some pals.

Business Casual

After two years of lounging around our house, it looks like some trips to the office might be in the cards this year. The fashion world has picked up on that, but not without a new twist. Say goodbye to full business looks (and your dreams of being an extra on Succession). Instead, say hello to adopting elements of more formal attire, primarily through outerwear and tailored, but still casual, looks.

Contrast is King

The dominance of tonal looks has, well, toned down. Instead, clashing fabrics, prints, and cuts seem to dominate the fashion world right now. Our take? With North America (and the rest of the world) more or less reopening, trends are moving towards high visibility instead of background blending. So yeah, mix that plaid with some stripes, who’s gonna stop you?

The World is a Stage

For our final trend for spring fashion in Canada this year, we can’t help but think about strutting our stuff at a nightclub, a nice restaurant… heck, we’re just about ready to go all out for our next Zoom call. Designers have reached new heights in the entertainment world (after all, the true winner in the Kim/Kanye breakup was Balenciaga) and we’ll admit that watching House of Gucci had us feeling like everyday should be dress up day.

After all, we don’t have to drop entire paychecks on designer brands to be looking good. Instead, use them as guiding posts while you’re checking out Depop, or taking a day to shop some local stores!
