Self-Driving Shuttles are coming to Toronto next Spring

It’s official. The future is here. Don’t believe us? Just check out these brand new self-driving shuttle cars in Scarborough. The technological revelation was announced this morning by Mayor John Tory and is set to officially hit the streets next Spring. Woah, did we just step into a sci-fi movie?

The self-driving shuttles are part of a pilot program by the City of Toronto, created through a partnership with Local Motors and will be operated with Metrolinx. The goal is to get folks from a neighbourhood in Scarborough to the Rouge Hill GO Transit station with speed and convenience.

Of course, they’ll be decked out with all kinds of safety and accessibility features as well. For starters, every self-driving shuttle will be equipped with a ramp and wheelchair securing system. Plus, they’ll each be able to hold eight passengers at a time and have a safety attendant on-board at all times.

Once these futuristic machines hit the streets there’s no telling what’s next! The jump from self-driving shuttles to flying cars really isn’t that far and we are more than ready to go full sci-fi flick. Keep your eyes out for these new shuttles next Spring.
