Seattle sure has a lot of water. Both water surrounding us and also water falling from the skies. And while our city is generally well prepared to handle the rainy season, some of our pipes are not. This is why a massive new tunnel boring machine has been brought to our city. And the fun part is, the city needs your help to name it.

The project that is currently underway will create a 29 million-gallon storage tunnel in Ballard. And this is badly needed so that sewage overflows stay out of our local waterways when it rains. So now Ballard has a 122-foot deep hole in which the machine will begin its 2.7-mile journey. Crazy right?

And if you’re wondering, this new machine is much smaller than Bertha. So don’t worry about a massive hole under Ballard because this tunnel will be about the size of a standard transit tunnel. But the bottom line is that this new tunnel will remove 75 million gallons of combined sewage overflow. And that’s a good thing for our health and for the environment.

If you’d like to learn more you can click here. And if you’d like to submit a name for the machine you can click here. Let’s see if we can get a name that’s a little more creative than Bertha. After all, there are quite a lot of local things we could name this new machine after.
