Ryan Reynolds is one step closer to buying the Ottawa Senators

An epic moment in Canadian sports history is one step closer to happening. Ryan Reynolds’ Ottawa Senators purchase could soon become reality, and the actor is taking big steps to make it happen.

Reynolds recently teamed up with the Toronto-based real estate development corporation The Remington Group, reported the Ottawa Sun’s Bruce Garrioch back in February.

The company has recruited Reynolds to make a bid for the team and build a brand new rink close to downtown Ottawa, reports Garrioch.

Well, the league has confirmed to Garrioch that the duo is preparing to bid over $1 billion USD to purchase the team and Ottawa’s Canadian Tire Centre — yes, you read that right!

The journalist reports that Reynolds and The Remington Group’s Christopher Bratty are looking to close the deal as soon as possible, and the deadline for final binding bids is May 15th.

Despite the Remington Group’s involvement in the Senators purchase, the Hollywood star would be front and centre as the “face of the franchise” and play a part in key decision-making.

The Remington Group is described as one of Ontario’s largest land developers and is largely responsible for developing the city of Markham.

Reynolds has previously talked about his interest in buying the franchise and said that he’d need “a partner with really deep pockets” to do so.

Ryan Reynolds’ Ottawa Senators purchase wouldn’t be his first major foray into professional sports.

The star teamed up with Rob McElhenney to buy the Welsh football club Wrexham AFC last year.

According to CBC, the small-town club has gained new sponsorships and even moved up the league rankings since the duo bought the team.

Reynolds said on The Tonight Show that while Vancouver will always have his heart, he also recognizes Ottawa as his hometown, where “children are eased out of the womb in ice skates.”

Reynolds and the Remington Group will have some competition as various groups work to submit their bids before the deadline, says Garrioch.

But, if the deal goes through, this could be the best Canadian sports collab since Drake and the Raptors.
