This gorgeous beach in Ontario has exposed fossils of a coral reef

Aspiring paleontologists, this one’s for you. For beach days with a side of ancient history, look no further than Rock Point Provincial Park.

This spot is not your average day trip destination. It has pre-historic fossils that you have to see to believe.

Located on the north shore of Lake Erie in southwestern Ontario, Rock Point is home to a sandy beach with exposed fossils of an ancient coral reef.

These fossils date back over 350 million years, according to Ontario Parks.

You will find them along a limestone shelf along the sandy beach, which stretches for about 1 km.

The park is also home to sand dunes and there’s a viewing platform where you can take in the unique vistas.

It wouldn’t be a provincial park without some hiking trails, and there are about 2 km worth of trails in total.

In the fall, visitors can witness the annual monarch butterfly migration, and it’s truly spectacular.

The Carolinian forests, wetlands, and dunes make for a stunning backdrop as you enjoy everything this park has to offer, including camping and wildlife watching.

According to Ontario’s Southwest, over 260 bird species have been recorded at the bird banding station within the park.

And of course, the sand and pebble beach is an ideal spot to spend a lazy summer afternoon.

So if you’re looking for a weekend adventure that involves nature, history, and scenic views, it’s safe to say that Rock Point has it all!
