A new downtown Edmonton park has giant swinging benches

Nestled in the middle of downtown Edmonton is one of the most gorgeous parks in the city.

O-day’min Park is the newest park in Edmonton, having just held its grand opening this November. Previously just gravel parking lots, this green space transforms downtown Edmonton into a stunning landscape and community space.

When I walked in from 107th Street, one of the main entrances, I was simply entranced.

An abundance of swinging benches

In the main northern lights installation, several swinging benches are featured. When I went, all of them were taken up by friends, family, and dates just swinging their hearts out. It was such a peaceful scene; the installation was a perfect contrast to the city’s rush.

The large hill also provides a tobogganing spot for kids and adults, too, so that’s fun!

Since I arrived during the day, I didn’t get to see the beautifully lit-up version of the installation. The benches hang out of the central loop, which lights up during the evening for a stunning light show.

The concept for the park and the Northern Lights feature was created by the late contemporary landscape architect Claude Cormier with CCxA.

Gorgeous animal structures all around

All around the park are these animal tribute statues and sculptures. Simply put, they add something to the park that others miss: adventure, spirit, and heart.

Even just stepping into the children’s playground, you can feel the love and care put into the craftsmanship. I took a long look at this beautiful deer playground structure, which the kids were just previously enjoying. It overlooks the park and is such a wonderful addition to the already stunning grounds.

And a pavilion with stunning washrooms

There’s a beautiful pavilion with fire pits and seating outside the large red building. It’s to be used as a community space, as well as home to the well-maintained washrooms.

The park’s hours are from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. every day of the week. This pavilion and the washrooms, however, are only open 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.

In addition to all these wonderful features, there’s also a hard surface sports court with basketball hoops, a fitness area, and a dog off-leash park. This park really has everything to offer, no matter what you’re looking to do.

Edmonton’s newest park is absolutely amazing, so whenever you’re downtown, you definitely need to check it out.
