Edmonton could see the northern lights this Valentine’s Day

Not sure what to do this Valentine’s Day? Space enthusiasts and love birds are encouraged to get out and look up! As predicted by the University of Alaska Fairbanks, the Northern Lights could be visible over Edmonton this week and honestly, we can’t think of anything more romantic.

A collision between the sun’s charged particles and gasses in Earth’s upper atmosphere, the lights of the Aurora Borealis are often visible from northern destinations like the Yukon, Norway and Greenland.

Depending on how active the sun has been, however, its neon designs are pushed down and out giving southern places a better seat for the show and February 14th and 15th, 2023 could be two of those days!

“Auroral activity will be active,” UOAF wrote on their website. “Weather permitting, active auroral displays will be visible overhead from Inuvik, Yellowknife, Rankin and Iqaluit to Juneau, Edmonton, Winnipeg and Sept-Iles.’

Of course, because nothing is promised and visibility will depend greatly on the weather, we wouldn’t recommend betting your life on anything – but stay enthusiastic!

Our advice? Get your partner a box of chocolates just in case and head north of the city. Who knows you could be among the lucky ones!

Good luck and remember to tag us in your photos and enjoy!
