A concert venue for diverse artists is set to open on Queen St West this summer

A new live music venue and rehearsal space are in the works for Toronto. Set to take over the corner of Queen St West and Augusta Ave, the venue will be a place where new and emerging artists can perform and practice.

City staff submitted a proposal for the venue, which would operate temporarily until the site is redeveloped into a new city park, cultural space, and affordable housing in 2024.

The plan is to lease out the property rent-free for two years to It’s OK*, a non-profit organization that supports Black, Indigenous, and racialized musicians. The DIY venue will be a space where artists from marginalized communities can develop and showcase their talents.

“Queen West is at the heart of Toronto’s live music scene, which is essential to our city’s vibrancy, culture, and economy,” tweeted city councillor Joe Cressy about the venue.

“But after 2 difficult years, live music venues and artists are still dealing with impacts of the pandemic. We must continue to do all we can to support them.”

Mayor John Tory also tweeted his support for the venue, saying that he’s proud to support the initiative.

According to the proposal, the venue could be ready for public use by mid-2022, meaning we could be attending concerts there as early as this summer.
