New plans revealed for the future of the George Massey Tunnel

There are few things that we think most Metro Vancouverites feel the same about, but a general disdain for the George Massey Tunnel is absolutely one of them. The tunnel, which spans the Fraser River to connect Richmond to Delta, has been a headache for motorists for at least a couple of decades, if not longer.

And it’s not like previous governments haven’t taken a shot at fixing it. From expanding the 4-lane tunnel to six, to building a new one beside it, to even creating a massive bridge instead, there’s been chatter about it for at least 15 years.

Which is why the recent news that it’s getting replaced is music to our ears. Today, the Provincial Government announced a roughly $4.15B project to replace the Massey Tunnel with another, much larger underground tunnel. This new tunnel will have double the capacity of the current one, with 8 lanes instead of 4. Then, 2 of those will be dedicated for rapid transit.

That’s not all, though. In addition to the tunnels for cars, another will be created for cyclists and pedestrians to use. Basically, they’re taking the tunnel (which was built in the 50s) and replacing it with a modern commuting standard. And best of all? No more tolls!

Now, of course, a lot of work needs to be done before construction can even begin. So, we won’t see anything concrete until around 2026, with the tunnel opening by 2030. So, maybe don’t hold your breath, but do wish for a speedy process!
