Netflix introduces partnership to support Black Canadian filmmakers

Great news, film fans and Black Canadian filmmakers! Netflix has just officially signed on in support of a ton of emerging Black Canadian filmmakers. Which means even more diverse stories from across the country will be able to be told! The initiative is a partnership with the Fabienne Colas Foundation. And it became official earlier this week.

So the Being Black in Canada program has been around since it’s beginning in 2014, with the goal of supporting and amplifying Black stories and voices across the country. The initiative provides Black filmmakers with mentorships and training. As well as helping them work with industry professionals to create and screen films at national Black film festivals.

But now with the support of Netflix, their reach can go even further. The popular streaming service is collaborating with the National Bank and Canada Media Fund to provide an awesome sponsorship that’ll expand this year’s program. Participating cities include Montreal, Toronto, and Halifax for this year. Plus, they plan on adding Ottawa, Calgary, and Vancouver in the next few years.

So there you have it! If you’re a Black Canadian filmmaker and want to take advantage of this incredible opportunity, head online to learn more. We’ll be watching out for the awesome diverse content that this partnership will produce.
