Netflix is releasing a docuseries on the mysterious & tragic case of Canadian Elisa Lam

Like a lot of you, our ‘YouTube recommended’ is littered with videos on true crime and the unimaginable. From podcasts and books to TV reenactments, we feel like we’ve seen it all. Or at least we thought we had until we stumbled across the case of 21-year old, Elisa Lam, a Canadian girl whose tragic and eerie death remains unexplained.

Fast forward nearly eight years to the day of her death, and Netflix has announced that her story will be retold, blown wide open, and shared with a new audience in an original docuseries, Crime Scene: The Vanishing at the Cecil Hotel.

Lam left her home of Vancouver, British Columbia in 2013 to embark on a solo trip down the west coast. After promising her worried parents that she would call every day to check in, she flew to Los Angeles and checked into the Cecil Hotel.

Well known for its chilling past and affiliations with notorious criminals like Richard Ramirez; it’s really no surprise that this, unfortunately, is where everything would come to a head.

Only days after settling in, Lam was found at the bottom of the hotel’s rooftop water tank. Despite CCTV footage, which appears to show her running away from someone, or something or the fact that many believe she could not have gotten into the tank by herself, her death was ruled as an accident.

Directed by Joe Berlinger, the man behind the streaming giant’s Conversations with a Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes,  Crime Scene: The Vanishing at the Cecil Hotel will available on Netflix on February 10th in hopes of finding an answer to the question, “what happened to Elisa Lam?”
