Prime Video announced a new documentary about Canada’s Mr. Dressup & sounds so wholesome

Watching Mr. Dressup on a weekday morning was a major part of the Canadian experience. Sadly, it’s been off the air since the late 90s – but it certainly hasn’t been forgotten.

A memory shared by generations, the show had a pretty big impact on kids from coast to coast – so naturally, it was only a matter of time before it was the subject of a documentary.

Next year, Canadians are encouraged to shed a happy tear alone, or with friends and family when Prime Video debuts its feature-length film based on the life and legacy of Ernie Coombs, the man behind the Tickle Trunk.

“Mr. Dressup was, and continues to be, a fun, creative, kind, and safe show for viewers of all ages,'” said director and writer Rob McCallum in a press release.

“It’s a great honour to share the rich history, cultural significance, and unlimited imagination of the show and its key creators with all of Canada and the entire world.”

Using footage collected over 29 years, this documentary will combine archived footage, as well as interviews with puppeteers, musicians, family members and other notable Canadians in hopes of painting a vibrant picture of who Coombs was behind the camera.

“Mr. Dressup holds a special place in the memories of millions, and Ernie, along with his puppet friends Casey and Finnegan, are the cornerstones of childhood entertainment for generations of Canadians,” said Nav Saini, head of content, Canada, Prime Video.

“We are thrilled to work with our partners at marblemedia and the CBC to bring Canadian audiences a documentary that serves as a reminder of the power of creativity, the need for compassion, and the importance of playtime, from one of our most important entertainment icons.”

As of right now, the untitled Mr. Dressup Documentary does not have a release date, but it’ll only be a matter of time until we get more information about the upcoming project.
