The Mount Rainier Scenic Railroad is back for a limited-time this fall

The Mount Rainier Scenic Railroad is back! After much uncertainty over the past few years, and an over three-year hiatus, one of Washington’s most iconic scenic railroads is returning for a limited-time on weekends this September and October. Here’s how you can take a ride and what’s new.

First off, how is this all happening? According to an Instagram post, the “nonprofit organization that originally founded the railroad in 1980 has reformed to bring it back to life.”

The reopening began with the railroad’s newest edition, a 6-mile roundtrip railcycling excursion in May.

Now, Steam is back for a limited time only. Visitors can make online reservations to ride on a 1 hour and 15-minute, 12-mile journey on a historic train. You’ll get to experience the thrill of a real steam locomotive, as the train is driven from Elbe to Mineral by 100 year-old steam engine, Polson 70.

In tow, there is also an open-air car, two historic Pullman passenger coaches, and a baggage car which has been outfitted as a gift shop and concession stand.

What’s more, there are even new, whiskey-tasting trains on select weekends. During the Whiskey and Steam rides, guests will get to enjoy samples of three local whiskeys as well as an assortment of cheese, crackers, and other snacks.
