Move over, Zoom – Microsoft’s new product will allow people to meet holographically

2021 may not have been the year for hugs or travel, but it certainly was the year of sweet scientific advancement. From sustainable planes made from cannabis to space hotels, we really felt like we had seen it all, until today. Move over Zoom, Google Earth and Playstation, because Microsoft just revealed Mesh, a universal software that could change socializing as we know it.

Described as a “new mixed-reality platform,” Mesh will allow people to really be together, apart.

Instead of grabbing a drink face-to-camera in a chatroom, this product enables friends to meet in a shared virtual reality space, appearing as a holographic projection of themselves anywhere, anytime that they want.

“This has been the dream for mixed reality, the idea from the very beginning,” Microsoft Technical Fellow Alex Kipman said in a statement. “You can actually feel like you’re in the same place with someone sharing content or you can teleport from different mixed reality devices and be present with people even when you’re not physically together.”

Not only do they hope that friends and family will use this product recreationally, but they also believe it could be incredibly beneficial to businesses, students, designers and explorers.

From maps to biology, Microsoft Mesh can be programmed to do and show a variety of things, in an interactive true-to-life way – and that is insanely cool.

For more information on the product or to read the entire statement, check out their website here and buckle up, Canada; because it appears that we’re going full speed ahead into the Matrix Era, where anything is possible and nothing is off-limits.
