mgk officially can’t stop raving about Alberta accents

Gettin’ ripped with the buds on a Tuesday is a pretty common occurrence here in Alberta, but apparently the way we talk about doing just that has recently made the rounds online.

The unique Alberta accent has long been a subject of humour. It was even turned into a meme on Instagram recently, with a series of reels inserting the accent into movie scenes from Harry Potter and The Notebook.

Apparently, those reels have gone global. And they’ve even made their way to the For You page of a certain pop-punk musician, Machine Gun Kelly (mgk).

mgk made an appearance in Calgary on Nov. 29 during his Lost Americana tour, and he launched right into it on stage at the Scotiabank Saddledome. While breaking for bants between songs, mgk started going off about how much he loves Alberta accents, and even did his best impression of one himself.

“You guys are really legendary to me,” he said. “I watch so many videos on reels of you guys, of, like, famous movies doing Alberta accents. Have you guys seen Harry Potter the Sorting Hat, doing an Alberta accent? Top tier. Have you seen The Notebook doing, The Notebook scene with Ryan Gosling doing Alberta accent? It’s fire. It runs my whole For You page. So good job.”

Later on in the set, he proceeded to launch into his own rendition of an Alberta homeboy accent, and it was honestly pretty good.

“We’re getting swacked on a Saturday night in Calgary, yeah,” he said to cheers and laughter. He then referred to himself and the band with a series of good ‘ol ‘Berta boy expletives.

Our accent is pretty interesting, but we weren’t aware that it’s also become a global sensation. Most people who mimic it look like a real hoser, but there’s just something about that unique Western Canadian drawl that’s unforgettable.

At any rate, you’re welcome back in Alberta anytime, mgk!
