What is Mercer Island known for? Being expensive mostly, and now it’s getting a little bit of press but not necessarily good press. The eastside city and some of it’s neighbors have actually ranked among the least desireable places to live in the nation. Let’s see why.
CouponBirds looked at the least desirable places to live in America on a $100k salary. In order to create this ranking they relied on a survey of 3,000 respondents.

Here’s the question: “Which of America’s 150 most expensive cities would you least like to live in, if earning a salary of $100,000?”
The answer is not Mercer Island, Medina, or Bellevue.
Mercer Island came in 44th place, the reason being that it has a limited supply of homes and high demand which contribute to an overall high cost of living.
Bellevue came in 63rd place for most undesirable place to live. That being said, the eastside city happens to be one of the fastest-growing and most expensive metropolitan areas in the United States.
Lastly, Medina came in 92nd place. The private community is home to several billionaires with most residents working in high-paying industries like tech. It’s long been known as an expensive place to live and therefore not accessible top most.
All in all the top ten least desirable places to live on a salary of $100,000 are the following:
- Palm Beach, Florida
- Wailea, Hawaii
- Hilton Head Island, South Carolina
- Isle of Palms, South Carolina
- New York City, New York
- Bal Harbour, Florida
- Kailua, Hawaii
- Bellaire, Texas
- Malibu, California
- Beverly Hills, California
When you think about it, it makes sense, it’s not a direct reflection of what the communities are like but rather their costs.
