This small town in BC has 11 historic neighbourhoods & a beloved pumpkin patch

While a visit to Maple Ridge might not feel like that big of a trip considering it’s still in Metro Vancouver, a day spent there is definitely worthwhile, as there are tons of historic sites to explore on foot, family attractions, and exciting arts & culture events coming up.

Located on the traditional territory of the Katzie and Kwantlen First Nations, Maple Ridge’s archaeological history dates back at least 10,000 years, according to The City of Maple Ridge. Its Halkomelem name ‘Z’wa?acstan’ translates into “place where the golden eagles are,” and you can go on a heritage tour of the city through a self-guided Port Haney Heritage Walk.

Named after the former owner of the townsite Thomas Haney, the walk connects the famed Port Haney area to the scenic Fraser River, and is around 1.4 km each way. While the journey is ranked “moderately difficult” by the City, it’s well worth it – visitors can pass by the Haney House and remnants of its original orchard (built in 1883), St. Andrew’s Heritage Church Hall (built in 1888), and the town’s Original Post Office (built in 1932), and that’s just for starters.

As for other historic neighbourhoods to check out – Ruskin was once home to many lumber and saw mills along the Stave River, Silver Valley has a scenic trail network to explore as the leaves change colours, and Port Hammond is full of character, and has graced the silver screen via many popular films, according to the City.

Maple Ridge is also home to Laity Pumpkin Patch, a beloved family-owned patch that has created annual traditions for families in the area for over 30 years. Now with an additional South pumpkin patch designed for adults and older children, the pair of patches are located across the street from each other, and both have u-pick fields with a variety of pumpkins ranging in colour and size.

Prices go from anywhere between $2.50 for small sugar pumpkins up to $12 for a large 40 lb pumpkin, with all prices in between.

Finally, if you’re looking for even more outdoor opportunities available year-round, consider a trip to Golden Ears – one of the largest parks in the province.
